The Mohawk Trail Regional School (MTRS) Music Department was recently awarded a $5,000 GRAMMY Museum Signature Schools award to replace the school’s worn-out percussion instruments which date back to the early 1970s.
The grant, which came as a surprise to MTRS music teacher Stephanie Barstow, will provide funding for the school to purchase new percussion equipment.
"We’re excited and honored to have been selected as a GRAMMY Museum Signature Schools grant recipient. This grant will allow us to buy some much needed equipment for our department including percussion instruments, guitars, and even a new amplification system for our rock band,” said Barstow. “Our students are beyond excited to use this new equipment to expand upon their growing creativity. I am so thankful to Carla Potts, our grant writer for this project, and the GRAMMY Museum for their support of music programs throughout the country, including ours."
Barstow said providing students with updated equipment will help provide them with more opportunities to explore different instruments. Current equipment is severely aged, and in many cases, falling apart. Several bongos and drums show significant wear and cracks from over 40 years of use rendering them nearly unusable.
